My own struggles

For a long long time I thought I didn’t deserve happiness. I don’t know why, there was no big trauma in my life that caused it.

It was just a negative thought in my head, a niggle that grew bigger and bigger and louder and more powerful until I started to believe it.

At first it was only something that popped into my head once in a blue moon, but over the course of a few years, a breakup with a boyfriend, it came into my head more often, and with more force. It was as if the voice was louder and more insistent.

I tried to ignore it, I tried to be brave, but the truth is I didn’t have any skills to really deal with it.

Having that voice in my head constantly reminding me I wasn’t good enough to be loved, it crushed me. I got to a point where I thought I had better make my peace with the fact I will always be alone and single. I will never love, or be loved, get married, have children. It will just be me, and the dog I thought I should get.

When I’m like that, I find that I am more likely to think negative thoughts, everything that happens seems overwhelming (like my new neighbours making too much noise when moving in), and it seems overwhelmingly bad.

I obsess over things in a very negative way, replaying events over and over while lying in bed trying to fall asleep, until even the most innocent event takes on a sinister motivation.

This will eventually get out of hand when I come to the conclusion that my whole life seems awful and pointless, and that I really don’t have anything going for me.

Over the years I’ve realized that this type of negative thinking will spiral out of control if I don’t put an end to it.

It’s not easy, but it is possible to snap out of it, to stop that snowball of negativity right in it’s tracks before it drags you down into your own hell.

I learned how to rewire my brain

It really made me miserable, it held me back at work in my career, I struggled to make friends and I never thought I would find love.

Then a few years ago I stumbled on a technique that essentially taught me to rewire my own brain.

I say stumbled, because no-one taught me this technique, it’s something I came up with all by myself, then refined over the next few years that followed.

It allowed me to change the way I was thinking and feeling.

I learned to deliberately change my own emotions.

It sounds crazy, but it’s completely doable.

Since then my life has changed dramatically.

My life became so much better

I found the love of a wonderful man that treats me with kindness and respect, who is also my best friend and confidant. who listens to my troubles, gives me great advice, finds my opinions interesting and refreshing.

I love him, and he loves me.

At work I have been promoted to VP, my yearly income has increased by more than $45k, I bought a house, a shiny new car, and I still have money to give to my mother every month. Plus I started this blog.

I did all of this by myself, by believing in myself, by believing that I DESERVED it, that I could do it if I just tried, that I had the power to change my own life.

I should say, it wasn’t all smooth sailing, there has been many days with setbacks.

Even now I still feel that everyone is going forward faster than I am, that I have to work twice as hard to progress half as much as they do.

But the truth is, I am doing great.

I have build a wonderful life for myself, and in doing so I’ve learned what I’m capable of.

But now I know that ANYONE can be happy and successful, they just need to learn the skills to do it.

Anyone CAN change their thoughts.
